Operational oceanography has been a major topic of research and development over the past decade and there is increasing practical experience in implementation. However, in this exciting area there remain many wide-ranging challenges and opportunities. This conference stream focused on the delivery of effective oceanographic observing, monitoring and forecasting systems.

Chairman - Robin Stephens, Director of Ocean Numerics chairs the WMTC 2006 Operational Oceanography stream with its theme ‘Delivering Operational Oceanography’

The Chairman’s views prior to the conference :

Robin Stephens sees acceptance by end users of emerging technology and its reliability for use in operational decision-making as the key challenges of his segment of the industry. “At WMTC 2006 the stream will provide an opportunity for high quality technical presentations, technical exchange on key topics and also communication to a broader audience,” he explains.

“The stream will also focus on practical experience in delivering solutions and thus on the progress achieved in operational ocean forecasting capability over the past five years.”

Robin Stephens plays an active role in IMarEST on the Membership Committee and as a Vice President. He is particularly keen to see greater development of marine science activities within the Institute.

Looking forward to WMTC 2006 he sees it as an ideal way of allowing cross-fertilization of information and ideas including the following themes:

  • Initiatives and regulatory frameworks for operational oceanography
co-ordination of global, regional and local initiatives • co-ordinated research and development programmes • public outreach
  • Ocean observing systems
satellite observation • fixed and drifting observation systems • ship-based systems • enabling technologies
  • Ocean forecast modelling and data assimilation
example operational modelling systems • practical implementation and benefits of data assimilation schemes
  • Ocean data management and dissemination
data management systems • data exchange – protocols and policies • getting data to the real decision-maker
  • Industry applications
oil and gas • shipping • renewable energy
  • Government applications
defence • fisheries • coastal management
