All navies are facing increased financial, environmental, legislative, and support constraints, whilst under pressure to maintain maximum operational capability. This conference stream considered the innovative and novel concepts being developed to address these challenges and the practicalities of turning them into reality.

Chairman - Captain John Newell MBE Royal Navy chairs INEC 2006 – the 8th International Naval Engineering Conference, the naval engineering stream at WMTC 2006 with its theme ‘From Concept to Reality’.

The Chairman’s views prior to the conference:

“Getting modern and up to date technology into our new warships and retro fitting older vessels is our greatest challenge,” explains Captain John Newell. "The WMTC theme of ‘Maritime Innovation – Delivering Global Solutions’ will be developed further for INEC, with innovative and novel concepts being developed to meet the financial, environmental, legislative, support and operational constraints facing the navies of the future whilst keeping the operational edge and maintaining maximum operational capability."

“The INEC title ‘From Concept to Reality,’ and the associated themes, aims to encourage authors to look at these new technologies and the practical aspects of turning concepts into practical reality at sea.”

Some of these themes are:

  • Innovative platform designs
    submarines • multi-hulls • SES • fast ship • naval architecture • hydrodynamics
  • Global support solutions
contractor logistic support • total care package • v endor managed inventory
  • Propulsion systems
integrated electric propulsion • prime movers • fuel cells • platform management systems • automation
  • Auxiliaries
environmental • electrification • heat management • energy storage
  • SMART acquisition
naval standards • classification • maritime platform characteristics • owners’ requirements
  • Modelling and simulation
    equipment • systems • training
  • Human factors
    complement reduction • synthetic trainer

Turning from challenges to successes he cites the introduction of integrated electric propulsion into the Fleet. “We, as Marine Engineers in the Royal Navy, need a vision, a champion and the opportunity to discuss in an open forum, the way ahead.

“The World Maritime Technology Conference is the ideal opportunity to enhance the reputation of the International Naval Engineering Conference series and to expose attendees to common areas of interest and concern in all maritime industries. It will build on the success of INEC 2004, aiming to attract more delegates, including more international representation, and cutting edge technologies from large established companies but also the smaller newcomers with innovative products. The themes covered will include key issues such as Innovative Platform Designs, Global Support Solutions and SMART Acquisition. A bigger conference in London means more delegates, better keynote speakers and a more prestigious event .”
