A MESSAGE FROM THE LORD MAYOR OF LONDON

The Lord Mayor of London will be the principal guest and speaker at the combined WMTC 2006 Conference Dinner and IMarEST 103rd Annual Dinner at London’s Grosvenor House.

“What better place could there be to stage the World Maritime Technology Conference than London? Our capital city is unrivalled as the world’s largest and most important maritime centre.

“The City of London, the ‘Square Mile’ that I have the great honour of representing, has an important role as home to the majority of the marine and P&I underwriters and brokers, shipbrokers, lawyers, arbitrators, accountants, average adjusters, classification and consulting surveyors and bankers whose professional services enable UK and overseas-based ship owners to service world trade economically and effectively. As my professional life has been spent in insurance I am well aware that in just one year marine insurers alone contributed £150 million in overseas earnings to the UK economy.

“There are other equally impressive figures relating to London’s role:

1750 maritime companies / organisations are London-based – including the International Maritime Organization and the Baltic Exchange
Eight of the 13 P&I (Protection & Indemnity) Clubs insure 90% of the world’s tonnage
English law is used for many multi-national contracts
Overseas earnings of UK maritime services - £2.2bn (2002)
20% of the world’s fleet managed from the UK
London ship brokers handle 50% of tanker and ~35% of all dry cargo charter business
15-20% of shipping finance is written by UK banks

“When percentages are spoken of, we have to remember that the total maritime business globally is said to average over $1 trillion ($1,000 billion) per annum, so we are talking of impressive figures here.

“I wish you well in your deliberations at WMTC 2006, may it indeed provide your expressed intention of a “wake up call” on the maritime challenges facing governments and decision makers across the world; and I look forward to meeting you at the combined WMTC and IMarEST 103rd Annual Dinner at the end of what I know will be a busy and highly stimulating week for you all.”

The Rt Hon The Lord Mayor of The City of London, Alderman David Brewer CMG
